Chipped Floors, Broken Rims and Tampered Locks are just some of the many reasons why students might not be enjoying free play in the gym this semester. A police report was filed on January 20th 2009 according to Campus Security Capt Thomas Lee stating that there was “a breaking and entry at the school gymnasium”. Lee goes on to say, “allegedly, there weren’t any malice or criminal intent but, rather a group of guys trying to find a warm place for a game of basketball”. Kim Miller, Assistant Athletic director, says “I don’t mind students using the gym while I’m on the clock”. But, for the most part Miller complains at how the students mistreat the facility while occupying the gym.”One time last year, someone broke a rim, and we had to replace it,” said Miller. According to student affairs there has been a heightened request for students wanting to use the gym for free play. According to Junior Robert Redeer, ” taking away the weight room and gym only leads us to pursue other things, and in some cases they can be disruptive”. Student Affairs have taken upon themselves to enhance this semester’s activity calendar with local activities, to exclude playing in the cold. Director of Student Affiairs, Ebony Johnson says “not only should activities enhance the body but, enhance academic experience as well”.
